NVBDCP (National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme)

NVBDCP (National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme)NVBDCP is implemented in the State since2004, and previously the programme was known as National Anti MalariaProgramme. Since implementation of NVBDCP all Vector Borne diseases have been bought under its ambit, so that preventive and control measures can be implemented effectively by optimally utilizing the resources.

Major Achievements

  • Reduction in malaria incidence : The Annual Parasitic Incidence could be brought down to 0.94 in 2013 from 4.12 in 2004.
  • Gujarat state has screened 10 % population for malaria surveillance from 1961 to 1970, now which has reached up to 20.27%. in 2013.
  • The major benefit due to the reduction in malaria incidence in the community is the impact on overall development as well as at the individual level due less expences for treatment.

Malaria Control

Gujarat is considered as one of the endemic states for malaria in the country.

1953 : National Malaria Control Programme was introduced in the state

1958 : National Malaria Eradication Programme in 1958 with an objective to eradicate the disease. The anti parasitic as well as anti vector measures undertaken under National Malaria Eradication Programme has brought down the malaria incidence to a very low level (4008 cases in 1962) with no death. However in subsequent years reversal of the trend was observed.

1976 : 1.2million cases were reported in the state, which was a drastic increase.

1977 : Since the implementation of MPO malaria incidence has shown a cyclical trend with increasing and declining trend at an interval of 7-10 years. Five zonal entomological cells were also established in the state as per the guidelines of MPO. Similarly for operational research also a field station of Malaria Research Centre was set up at Nadiad in 1983

1996 : As per the recommendations of the expert committee Malaria Action Programme is implemented in the state.

1997 : Activities under Enhanced Malaria Control Project with World Bank assistance have also been initiated and being implemented. A total population of 95 lakh population in 11 tribal districts are covered under this project.

2003 : The programme has been renamed as National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme and all vector borne diseases like malaria, Filariasis, dengue etc. have been brought under the ambit of this programme.
