In Gujarat, The Central Medical Store Organization (now GMSCL) was established in 1978 under Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Gujarat. It was entrusted with the functions of Procurement, Storage, and Distribution of medicines, surgical goods, Medical equipments and insecticides for the Health institutes under Government of Gujarat.

Initiatives to ensure the Access to the Essential Medicines

  • Purchase of Generic drugs through e-tendering process and distribution of free generic medicines at all the Government facilities.
  • Annual rate contract for the medicines/instruments and equipments are done by the CMSO to ensure the uninterrupted supply of medicines and equipments.
  • Essential Drug List is available in Gujarat State and Drug formulary is prepared every year by Drug Formulary Committee constituted by Gujarat Medical Services Corporation Limited External website that opens in a new window and available online at the website of Health Department.
  • GMSCL (Gujarat Medical Services Corporation Limited) has been formed on the line of TNMSC. GMSCL will have new business plan, manual and policies to strengthen the overall quality procurement and logistics of drugs and equipments in Gujarat State.
  • Further, it was decided to setup 12 new drug depots (already 5 are functional) to strengthen the distribution network and include diagnostic and equipment maintenance services.
  • Stock management at all the Regional Drug Warehouses (Gandhinagar, Amreli, Jamnagr, Patan and Surart) of GMSCL is managed online through DLIMS (Drug Logistics Information and Management System). Drug Stock management at health facilities has been initiated with help of NIC and stock entry at PHC, CHC, SDH, DH and Medical College has started from August 2012 which will be strengthened over the period of time.
